Kathmandu. FOH Nepal has demanded the government to immediately make public the details of the damage caused by the devastating floods and landslides in the Bhotekoshi River and provide appropriate relief and compensation.
In a statement issued by Lokraj Awasthi, founding president of 4H Nepal, it has been said that even after two weeks of the devastating floods and landslides in the Bhotekoshi River on August 23, the details of the damage to farmers, agricultural productions, livestock and agricultural structures have not been received. The floods and landslides in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts have caused huge losses to farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs, including agricultural land, crops, livestock, agricultural inputs and agricultural infrastructure. However, the exact number of affected farmers, damaged crops, livestock and agricultural production have not been made public and the relief and compensation arrangements have not been made effective. FourH Nepal has demanded the government of Nepal and the concerned local levels to immediately make public the details of farmers affected by the floods, the loss of farms, the details of livestock, and the details of agricultural infrastructures including milk and vegetable collection centre, haat bazaar and other agricultural infrastructures swept away or damaged by the floods. The statement issued by Awasthi urged the government to provide immediate relief and compensation to the affected farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs, to provide compensation on the basis of loss and damage by assessing the damaged agricultural products, livestock, materials and infrastructures, and to arrange alternative income for the affected families.
Similarly, floods and landslides have damaged or washed away bridges, roads and transport routes in different areas of Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading, which has made it difficult for the farmers to transport vegetables, fruits, milk and other agricultural products to the market. According to the organization, farmers are facing further financial crisis as the situation of wastage of agricultural products due to lack of transportation and market access is increasing.
The statement urged the concerned local levels and the Government of Nepal to immediately make arrangements for alternative transportation and marketing of agro products, establish temporary agro collection centers and make arrangements for easy access of the products of the affected farmers to the market. Four H Nepal has also appealed to the Government of Nepal, donor agencies, social organizations and other stakeholders for cooperation and support for relief, rehabilitation and long-term management in the affected areas.
