Kathmandu. Minister for Health and Food Hygiene Nisha Mehta has said that an investigation is underway into the incident of childbirth outside the premises of Gajendra Narayan Singh Hospital in Rajbiraj of Saptari and action will be taken as per the law if found guilty.
Responding to the queries raised by lawmakers in Friday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, she said clarification was sought from the hospital within 24 hours and clarification has already been received. A five-member team including Nepal Medical Council Registrar Dr Suprabhat Shrestha and Ethical Committee Dr Ajay Shah has already reached Rajbiraj for an on-site investigation into the incident. The District Administration Office, Saptari has also formed an investigation committee.
She said that the investigation will clarify why the service recipients were able to leave the hospital premises and whether there was any deficiency in the service of the hospital. She also said that the employees who were on duty at the time of the incident have been removed from work and further investigation has been initiated.
According to him, the government has been providing free maternity service in government health institutions under the Mother and
Newborn Child Safety Programme and also to cover transportation expenses to and from the government health facilities.
He clarified that action would be taken as per the prevailing law if the maternity service is demanded or pregnant women are denied the service even though the maternity service is free in the government health institution. Stating that safe motherhood is the right of every mother, Minister Mehta said that no mother should have to give birth outside the door of a health institution.
