Bhotekoshi flood: Mother, who could not bear the pain of her son’s separation, also ends a tragic end
Ramechhap. Ngima Sherpa, a resident of Umakunda Rural Municipality-1, Gumdel, spent all his life working in hydropower. After working for a few years in the under-construction Likhu Hydropower Project near his village, he went to Rasuwa for employment. Ngima’s elder brother Dorje, who was working in Rasuwa Hydropower Company, also worked in this area. Hydro work became their life.
However, the devastating floods in Bhotekoshi on August 10 suddenly snatched away the happiness of the family. Ngima, who was working inside the compound of the hydropower company, went missing in the flood. After that, the pain that started in his family finally ended in another tragic incident.
After Ngima went missing in the floods, his mother Dolma Yangji Sherpa went to Kathmandu in search of her son. Dolma Yangji, 58, who had gone to Kathmandu in the hope of finding her son, was sent home by the company after telling her that there was little chance of finding her son alive.
The news of her son’s death could not hold her mother’s heart. Dolma Yangzi was deeply saddened by the loss of her son. She returned home from Kathmandu, but even after returning home, she could not control herself. The family came to the conclusion that her son had died.
She discussed with another son Dorje and her relatives about how to perform the last rites of her son. The matter was discussed till the night of September 16. She stayed with her family till late at night and then left the house. She left all the jewelry she was wearing safely at home. Dolma Yangzi, who left the house with the help of a torch light at night, did not come in contact with the family after that.
On the one hand, the pain of Ngima, who went missing in the flood, on the other hand, the sudden disappearance of her mother added another blow to the family. The next day, on the morning of September 17, the family, relatives and locals started searching for her. She was not found even after searching at a possible place.
After a five-day search, she was finally found dead in a river far away from where she lived. The incident of Dolma Yangzi leaving the world after not being able to bear the pain of her son’s separation has shocked the family and relatives.
Dolma Yangji, a resident of Techhim in Umakunda Rural Municipality-1, Gumdel, had been living in Kinja of Likhupike Rural Municipality-1 of Solukhumbu for a long time. After her body was found in a river in the same area, she was taken to Salleri, the district headquarters of Solukhumbu, for post-mortem.
After the post-mortem, he was cremated according to the Sherpa tradition in Salleri, according to his brother Pemba Sherpa. This double loss suffered by the same family in the span of a few days shows not only the story of a life swept away by the flood, but also the depth it left in the hearts of the family. The family is now in mourning amidst the irreparable loss after the mother who was shedding tears over the separation of Ngima.
