Participation from ASEAN to African Union

Philippines President Marcos is attending the summit in his capacity as the ASEAN Chair for 2026. India has reiterated its goal of enhancing cooperation in trade, maritime security and regional connectivity in the Indo-Pacific region, considering the Philippines as an important partner of its ‘Act East’ policy.

India looks forward to taking forward the cooperation with Indonesian President Subianto focused on development and prosperity, the Ministry of External Affairs said. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihassak’s visit will be important in order to further deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership with Thailand.

Cuba, African Union and WTO Presence

Cuban Foreign Minister Parrilla’s participation is seen by India as an opportunity to expand cooperation on the common agenda of the Global South. Burundi President Ndayishimiye is representing the African Union at the conference.

India also expects the presence of WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to give further impetus to discussions on inclusive trade, development and reforming the global trading system. The theme of the 18th BRICS Summit hosted by India on September 12 and 13 is ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’. The Summit is aimed at expanding cooperation among the member states in development, sustainability, innovation, climate action, energy security, financial stability and global institutional reforms.

Currently, BRICS comprises 11 member states: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. Amid growing fragmentation in the global economy, technological change, geopolitical uncertainty and the climate crisis, BRICS is seen as an important multilateral forum to promote the common voice of emerging economies and the interests of the Global South.
