Mustang. The Gharpajhong Climate Change Conference-2083 is going to be held in the mountainous district of Mustang to discuss the effects of climate change, environmental protection and local adaptation measures.
According to Bhim Kumar Basnet, Chief Administrative Officer of Gharpajhong Rural Municipality, the conference is going to be organized by the rural municipality. Mohan Singh Lalchan, chairperson of the rural municipality, said that the conference will be organized in the district headquarters Jomsom on September 30 and 14. The conference will be attended by local level people’s representatives, government bodies, conservationists, experts, civil society and local community representatives, Lalchan said. Increasing temperature in mountainous regions, changes in the form of snowfall, drying up of water sources, risk of glacial lakes and avalanches, floods and landslides and impact on agriculture system will be the main agenda of the conference. Climate change has also affected Mustang’s traditional agriculture, livestock, tourism, and local livelihoods. Stakeholders have been saying that coordination between local knowledge, scientific studies and government policies is necessary to deal with such challenges. The conference is expected to help build a common view on climate change risk reduction, local adaptation plan, environment-friendly development and protection of mountain communities.
