Nepal-China relations are of strategic and long-term importance: Jhalanath Khanal
Kathmandu. Former Prime Minister and respected leader of the Communist Party of Nepal, Jhalanath Khanal, has said that Nepal-China relations are not only a general strategic but also a strategic relationship of long-term importance. Addressing the concluding session of the ‘Kasthamandap Dialogue Series 3’ that kicked off in the capital on Saturday, he said the bilateral relations between the two countries are of extraordinary importance amidst the evolving global and regional geo-political situation. Khanal, who is also the patron of the Foundation for Peace, Development and Socialism, said Nepal has not been able to take adequate benefit from the rapid economic, scientific and technological development in its neighbourhood. He stressed the need to deepen, broaden and further enrich the relations between the two countries. Stating that Nepal is fully committed to the one-China policy and its territory should not be allowed to be used against China, he praised China’s support in disaster management. He said that China’s solidarity and relief assistance provided by China after the massive floods in Bhotekoshi was an example of neighbourly friendship. Stating that Nepal can learn a lot from China’s development experience, former Prime Minister Khanal said development was not possible without political stability. He said, “China has developed a socialist model based on its own unique characteristics. We have blindly imitated Western democracy, but now Nepal should also chart the path of transformation according to its 5,000-year-old history, civilization and unique characteristics.” In his concluding remarks, Khanal said that the Foundation will soon publish the papers and conclusions presented by experts, professors and scholars from Nepal and China in the form of a book. He also said that such dialogue series will be continued every three months.
