‘Chameli’s Poi’ with humor and entertainment: Narayan Tripathi becomes ‘Bhinaju’

Kathmandu. Famous comedian Narayan Tripathi has returned to the Nepali film industry after almost two decades. He is going to be seen on the big screen with the movie ‘Chameliko Poi’, which is set to be released on October 16.

Although he has been working in the telefilm from time to time, his activity in the film has not been seen for a long time. Stating that ‘Chameli’s Poi’ is his official comeback, Tripathi said that this time he has played the character in the same style that the audience has liked in the past.

In a conversation with Nepal News Bank, he said that he is excited to return to the film after a long time. According to him, ‘Chameli’s Poi’ is a comedy film and it also incorporates contemporary themes.

Tripathi said, “I came to the film after 18 years. But the telefilms were active. This comeback is after a long time, so I am excited now.” According to him, he has found a character in the film that matches his old comedy style. He said that the audience has tried to present the same form in the new story as they liked him in the past. Tripathi also said that he has a long-standing relationship with the film’s director Everest Surya Bohara. They were involved in drama together since they were teenagers.

Recalling his work in ‘Agnipariksha’, Tripathi said that he got an opportunity to work in ‘Chameli’s Poi’ due to his old relationship.

He said that director Bohara has been telling him about various roles from time to time and he wants to return to the film only after getting good roles. Tripathi said that he liked the role after director Bohara sent the script of ‘Chameli’s Poi’. He said that after listening to the script as well as the songs, he felt that the film would be suitable for his comeback. He plays the character of ‘Bhinaju’ in the movie.

He said that the director has also urged him to present himself in the style preferred by the old audience.

‘It’s a comeback, the way the audience liked me, the same Narayan Tripathi character is in this character. Bhinaju’s character has the same old look,’ he said.

Tripathi said that while entering the character on screen, his speaking style and way of presenting dialogues were also kept in the same style as before. Although it took some practice and hard work in the initial days, he feels that the old acting style has returned easily. According to him, during the shooting of the film, the atmosphere of the old days was also reminiscent.

He said that he got a lot of learning from working with senior artists to the new generation of comedians.

Tripathi said that ‘Chameli’s Poi’ is a comedy film based on contemporary issues. Stating that the title of the film gives some hints of the story, he said that the story will revolve around the problems faced by ‘Chameli’ when a person is away and the search for ‘Chameli’s Poi’.

The film stars Mukun Bhusal and Suraksha Pant in the lead roles. According to Tripathi, their characters also have an emotional aspect attached to entertainment. “It’s a comedy-based film, a film with a message,” he said.

He said that the film also raises the issue of how women are misrepresented or manipulated in society. He said that he is trying to convey a serious social message through humor.

Tripathi also said that there has been a change in the story and presentation style of Nepali films in recent times. In the past, there was a separate track for comedians, but now the actors are becoming an important part of the story.

According to him, acting in films is also becoming more natural now. He said that although ‘loud’ acting was seen to some extent in earlier films, now the practice of acting natural according to the character has increased.

Tripathi believes that there is a tendency in Nepali cinema to base the real story of the village and the events happening in the society. He said that such a story can connect the audience emotionally with the characters.

He said that the number and diversity of film production has also increased in recent times. Stating that films are being made on action, comedy, emotional and different themes, he said that Nepali audiences are now getting to watch films of different tastes.

According to Tripathi, there is a need for a strong foundation of entertainment in the film to bring the audience to the halls now. He said that the film should be able to pay for their time and expense as there are many entertainment options on mobile, TikTok and other digital mediums.

‘Jasmine’s Poi’ has a message along with entertainment. He believes that the film will make the audience laugh and make them think about some social issues.

Even though he lived abroad for a long time, his relationship with the Nepali film industry was not broken. He said that even while living abroad, he is following the activities of Nepali films and artists through YouTube, Facebook and other digital mediums.

According to him, while living abroad, he used to regularly watch news about Nepali films, arrival of new artists, business and various activities related to artists.

He also mentioned his compulsion and personal circumstances as the main reasons for returning to cinema. Now that many of these problems have been solved, he expressed his desire to spend the rest of his time with Nepali films and audiences.

Tripathi said that he wants to entertain the audience with some comedy films while staying in Nepal. He said that he could not work in Nepali films regularly as it is difficult to manage time for film shooting, dubbing and publicity while living abroad.

Tripathi is very excited about the audience’s reaction to his comeback. He said that the number of viewers asking him to return to the film industry on social media is significant.

He says that he has returned to the film because of this love of the audience. He said that in ‘Jasmine Ki Poi’, the audience will get a taste of the old comedy style even if they get to see him in a different character than before.

He said that he is excited about the success of the film and said that various aspects including story, weather, festivals will influence the business of the film. He said that the release of the film around Dashain and having a comedy film is a positive aspect.

Tripathi has asked the audience to reach the hall to watch ‘Jasmine Ki Poi’.

For Narayan Tripathi, who is back on screen after a long time, ‘Chameli’s Poi’ is not just a new film but an opportunity to reconnect with his old audience. Linking the old identity of the comedian with the new generation of actors and the changing film style, he is trying to continue his comeback among the Nepali audience through this film.
