Kathmandu Climate Week 2026: From climate justice to loss and damage to be discussed
Kathmandu. Kathmandu Climate Week 2026 will be held with the aim of bringing together climate justice, local initiatives, and global climate diplomacy on a single platform.
The event will be inaugurated by Minister for Foreign Affairs Sishir Khanal on October 2. Policy makers, lawmakers, representatives of political parties, climate experts and campaigners, local and indigenous communities, marginalized and climate-affected communities, youth, researchers, civil society, private sector, financial institutions, media and development partners will participate in the event. The event will be followed by a public screening on October 5.
Although Nepal contributes very little to global greenhouse gas emissions, it is facing serious impacts of climate change, according to the organizers. Rising temperatures, melting glaciers, changing patterns of rainfall, flash floods and prolonged droughts are putting more pressure on infrastructure, livelihoods, agriculture and food security.
According to the organizers, the recent climate-related disasters, especially the disasters in the Rasuwa-Bhotekoshi region, have shown that climate risk can turn into a national crisis in a short span of time. The program will also discuss the constraints on climate finance, the lack of data and research, and the structural challenges in not adequately reaching climate-vulnerable communities. The main concept of Kathmandu Climate Week is to connect the experiences of local communities and initiatives at the grassroots level with national policy and international climate diplomacy. The three-day dialogues and sessions will discuss how local experiences can impact national climate priorities and Nepal’s international climate diplomacy from the UN General Assembly to COP31. The program will focus on climate justice, inclusivity, accountability, and linking damage and harm to practical commitments.
On October 3, 17 parallel sessions will discuss five key topics, according to the organizers. These sessions will discuss topics such as the role of youth, indigenous and marginalized communities, climate finance, organic agriculture, circular economy, statistics, research and artificial intelligence, climate resilient infrastructure, private climate finance and private sector innovation.
Discussions will also be held on how Nepal can strengthen its climate resilience in the aftermath of recent flash floods and other disasters.
On October 4, the focus will be on frontline communities and the experience of implementation. A special session will be held on climate justice and Rasuwa-Bhotekoshi floods under the leadership of youth, and a dialogue on climate justice will be held in Nepal with the participation of lawmakers.
