JE vaccination campaign extended in Birtamod, those who missed out till Monday
Jhapa So far, 45,000 people have been vaccinated in Birtamod Municipality under the vaccination campaign against Japanese Encephalitis (JE). The Birtamod Municipality has extended the vaccination drive till Monday as some people of the target group have been left out of the vaccine.
According to Ganesh Rijal, public health inspector at Birtamod Municipal Hospital, the municipality had set a target of vaccinating around 60,000 people above 30 years of age.
As of Thursday evening, 44,500 people have been vaccinated under the campaign.
“Some of the targeted citizens are still missing out on the vaccine. We have made arrangements to vaccinate them by Monday to include them as well,” Rijal told Nepal News Bank.
The vaccination campaign was conducted in all the 10 wards of the municipality from September 24. For this, 56 vaccination centers and health workers were mobilized.
Mayor Pabitra Mahatara Prasain said the campaign has been launched by informing the people of the target group about the importance of vaccination as Birtamod is a market with high pressure of workers.
“It may be difficult for everyone to come to the vaccination center on time as the workers and other citizens working in the market area are busy with work. Therefore, we have extended the time with publicity to include the citizens who have been left out,” he said.
According to him, information about the vaccination has been given in all the wards and localities of the municipality. Local people’s representatives, health workers and volunteers have been mobilized to bring the vaccine to the citizens, especially daily wage earners.
Saraswati Mishra of Birtamod-3 said she believes that the risk of the disease will be reduced after getting vaccinated against JE.
“After getting vaccinated, the risk has also been reduced while working. Initially, there was a dilemma whether to get vaccinated or not, but now after getting vaccinated, I feel safe,” he said.
Vaccination campaign against JEE has been conducted in all 15 local levels of Jhapa. According to the Health Office, Jhapa, the campaign has been launched targeting the people above 30 years of age in the district. According to the preliminary information, the target was to vaccinate 4,85,055 people in the district. Five lakh 70 thousand doses of vaccine were received for the campaign.
According to the public data of the Health Office till September 27, 270,246 people have been vaccinated against JEE in Jhapa district.
As of last Tuesday, 40,313 people have been vaccinated in Mechinagar, 35,605 in Damak, 28,680 in Birtamod, 20,769 in Shivasatakshi, 19,636 in Gauradaha, 18,029 in Arjundhara, 17,928 in Kankai and 10,205 in Bhadrapur.
Similarly, the campaign has been launched in Kamal, Jhapa, Gaurigunj, Barhadashi, Haldibari, Kachankawal and Buddhashanti rural municipalities.
According to the Health Office, a special campaign has been launched in Jhapa keeping in mind the risk of JE infection. According to the office, 13 people tested positive for JE infection in the district in the current fiscal year, out of which seven died.
The timing of the campaign was different in different local levels of Jhapa. The initial schedule was to run the campaign from September 29 to 14 in Birtamod. According to the health office, the campaign will be conducted in Barhadashi and Buddhashanti till September 15.
Birtamod Municipality, however, has provided the opportunity to vaccinate the target group until Monday as per the local need and situation.
