Nepali Congress general convention representative and general secretary candidate Dr. Santosh Upadhyay has said that the party’s 15th general convention should be taken as a general convention to blow the bugle of change in Nepali politics.
Upadhyay, who is a general convention representative from Achham, said that the Nepali Congress has lost its political rhythm in the past but the 15th general convention would be important to re-establish it. He said that although the leadership change took place after the special general convention, the expected results have not been achieved. According to him, the expected results could not be achieved as the new generation could not be given adequate space in the decisive role of the party.
He said, “I see it as a big change in Nepal’s politics. Although the Congress had taken the reins of politics and the state in the past, it had lost its rhythm in recent times. Now the regular general convention is very important to recapture that momentum. This general convention is also necessary to stabilize Nepal’s state system and overall politics.” Upadhyay stressed that the participation of youths should not be limited to the central members but also to the office-bearers and decision-making level of the party. He said that while he was running for the post of general secretary, he had formed a strong team of youths from joint general secretary to central member.
He said that the campaign he has launched is focused on the objective of giving completion to the generational transition in the party. According to him, although the face of the leadership has changed, the form of leadership sought by the people has not yet been completed.
He said, “The generation campaign that we started in the party has been handed over and is stuck there again. The faces have changed, they are all good individually, but I think the leadership that the people want is still not complete. Therefore, there is a demand that the participation of the youth should not only be in the central members but also in the office bearers and decisive roles. Upadhyay, who is also a physician, said that the main objective of joining politics was to influence the lives of a large number of citizens through the policy making of the state rather than treating the patients personally.
He pointed out the need to develop health, education, employment, tourism and sports sectors from the district level. He said that there is a need to improve the policies and structures of the state to end the situation of people from remote districts going to Kathmandu for general health treatment.
“I have seen that I can contribute to how the state can move forward by improving the policy rather than treating one person. From health, education, employment and tourism to sports, there is a need to have strong leadership at the district level. The situation of patients from remote districts having to come to Kathmandu for treatment should be ended. For this, the leadership of the younger generation is needed. Giving an example of the hospital under construction in the district for many years when he worked as a doctor, he said that policy and political leadership was necessary for development.
Claiming that he has played a leading role in various national and international organizations along with his medical education, Upadhyay said that the party should give space to the capacity and leadership of the younger generation at the decision-making level.
