Journalists raise the issue of security and pension of journalists

Kathmandu. Media for Border Harmony, an umbrella organization of journalists working in the border areas of Nepal and India, organized a program in Saraiya to draw the attention of policymakers regarding the issues of journalists.

Journalists from Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, East Champaran, West Champaran, Sitamarhi, Shivahar, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Farbisganj and other districts discussed issues related to journalists’ interest. The suggestions put forth by the journalists were presented in the form of a demand letter, which was endorsed by the organization’s chairman, Amrendra Tiwari, said Amrendra Tiwari, chairman of the organization. Addressing the program, Paru MLA Shankar Raya said that local level journalists are the real backbone of the information mechanism and a large number of local journalists are actively bringing out the problems of the people and government schemes.

He said that he will take up the issues related to the safety and pension of journalists with the government and will try to raise them prominently in the assembly as well. Lalganj MLA Sanjay Singh also assured that he would take necessary steps on the issues related to the safety, dignity and socio-economic security of journalists.

On the occasion, the journalists drew the attention of the journalists to the formation of a Journalist Protection Commission to protect the safety and rights of journalists, to give accredited journalist status to journalists working at the rural level and to include senior journalists above 58 years of age in the journalist pension scheme. Similarly, the policy makers were also drawn to the need to run press clubs regularly to disseminate information about the government’s welfare schemes to journalists, to organize monthly press conferences at press clubs of each district on behalf of the district administration and to set up a ‘Journalist Emergency Assistance Fund’ to provide financial assistance to journalists in case of emergency. The program was presided over by Ranjan Kumar, District Chairman of Media for Border Harmony, Muzaffarpur and hosted by Senior Journalist Amrendra Tiwari.
