Economic Policy: Goal to make passport-holding youth entrepreneurs

Kathmandu. The Nepali Congress has put the youths who are looking for opportunities abroad at the center of the country’s economic development and has put forward a policy of making them partners in entrepreneurship and wealth creation and not just workers in the labor market.

The political proposal ‘National Renaissance and Prosperity’ presented by Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa in the 15th General Convention of the Nepali Congress has proposed to change the priorities of economic development, pointing out the main economic challenges of the country in recent times.

In the proposal, the symbol of the ‘farmer ploughing the plow’ of BP Koirala’s time has now been linked to the reality of ‘youths seeking opportunities within the country and abroad with passports in their hands’. The Congress has proposed to make the youth not only as a job-seeking workforce but also as partners in innovation, entrepreneurship and wealth creation.

The Congress has said that the success of the economic policy should not be measured only by the increase in GDP. The proposal states that the change in the standard of living of the citizens, the dignified employment created and the expansion of economic opportunities within the country should be taken as the main results of the economic policy.

For this, the Congress has proposed to make production, enterprise and employment expansion at the center of economic policy. The idea of making the private sector the main engine of economic prosperity has been put forward by connecting the youth in entrepreneurship.

‘Youths are not just workers in the labour market’

The Congress has said that the attitude of looking at the youth only as a necessary workforce for the labour market should be changed. The proposal states that the youth should be made partners in innovation, entrepreneurship and wealth creation.

For this, the Congress is of the view that a conducive environment should be provided to the private sector for investment and expansion of business, entrepreneurship opportunities for youths and opportunities for disadvantaged communities to participate in production and wealth creation.

The proposal of the Congress indicates that the state should create an environment where the youth can use their own capacity to create opportunities instead of distributing direct employment to the youth.

According to the proposal, the role of the state should be focused on ensuring effective regulation, modern infrastructure, quality public services and equal opportunity, rather than direct trade or business. On this basis, the Nepali Congress has put forward liberal, productive, and just economy as the three bases of its economic roadmap.

The liberal economy promotes the private sector and investment, production-oriented economy increases domestic production and employment, and a just economy connects those who are deprived of economic opportunities to production and wealth creation, according to the proposal.

In this way, the Congress has put forward the ideological direction of taking the economic policy from a situation dependent on income from foreign employment to an economy of production, enterprise and employment generation.
