Kathmandu. The Nepali Congress has announced a ‘Election Bureau’ with the strategy of fielding women candidates for the mayor or chairperson in 100 out of 753 local levels in the upcoming local level elections.

Speaking in the closed session of the ongoing 15th General Convention of the Nepali Congress, President Gagan Thapa announced that an election bureau will be formed in coordination with the central office and women candidates will be the candidates for mayor or chairperson in 100 out of 753 municipalities.

The bureau formed in this way will select the candidates and in some municipalities, people from outside the party can also be brought in. Thapa said this while speaking in the closed session of the Congress General Convention.

He said, “Only people who have taken the course of the Leadership Academy are candidates. When they are in the leadership of the rural municipality, how will the rural municipality or municipality run and what is public finance? They should know what climate change is.” The ‘Election Bureau’ formed under the leadership of party leader and vice-president Pushpa Bhusal has taken forward the election-oriented works in a systematic manner. The party is preparing to make a big change in the ticket distribution system this time.

The Nepali Congress has adopted the policy of fielding candidates through direct entry to the people who have been troubled by working in the party for a long time or should be a member for a certain time.

The party has given special priority to women candidates with the aim of making the local governments inclusive and empowered. As the party president has publicly stated, the Congress is preparing to field at least 100 women candidates for the major posts in the upcoming local level elections. The party is developing a modern system to make the ticket distribution process completely transparent, systematic and in line with the spirit of the organization.

According to Prakash Tiwari, who is also coordinating the political team and technical team under the Political Bureau, a system is being developed to appreciate both contribution and merit. Tiwari is also the chairman of Arjun Chaupari Rural Municipality, Syangja and a candidate for the central member in the 15th general convention. Tiwari said that the NC has concluded that electing capable, experienced and capable leadership is an essential condition for the country’s prosperity and good governance as the chief of the local government is an important post to provide direct service to the people.

The election process will formally start after the ongoing convention of the party. The Election Bureau has 17 members, including Tiwari, under the supervision of Bhusal as the coordinator and the outgoing joint general secretary Jeevan Pariyar as the co-coordinator. Of them, eight are from the political and nine from the technical sector.
