About Rs 600 crore is spent annually on the electricity bill payment counter
Kathmandu. About Rs 600 crore is spent annually on the operation of the electricity tariff collection counter of the Nepal Electricity Authority. According to the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Rs 59.79 crore is spent annually on such counters alone.
Even now, about 73 percent of the customers pay electricity bills by physically visiting the counter. Minister of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has made this fact public by urging the government to increase the electricity tariff payment through digital means.
He said that there are 655 tariff collection counters in the branches under the 129 distribution centers of the NEA. Minister Shrestha said that about Rs
50 million is spent on the operation of these counters every month.
According to Minister Shrestha, if digital payment is increased, the cost of operating the counter can be reduced and the manpower mobilized there can be used for other customer service.
He said that paying the bill through digital means will save the time and commuting cost of the customers and increase financial transparency and security when the cash transaction decreases. Minister Shrestha urged the senior citizens, parents and relatives who do not know how to make digital payments to be taught the method of digital payment.
He urged to take it not only as a campaign to increase digital payment but also as an issue related to saving people’s time, ease of service and effective use of public resources.
