The disaster we have faced is the result of the injustice done to the poor countries by the capitalist countries: Prachanda

Kathmandu. Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has blamed climate change and the wrong development model of developed capitalist countries for the damage caused by the catastrophic floods in Rasuwa and Nuwakot.

Speaking at a program organized to hand over temporary shelters to flood victims in Nuwakot on Tuesday, Prachanda said that floods should not be considered only as natural disasters.

“Many people say it is a natural disaster. But this catastrophic flood in Rasuwa and Nuwakot, unimaginable damage, thousands of lives have been lost, property worth billions and trillions has been destroyed, it is not just due to any natural disaster,” he said.

He said that countries like Nepal have suffered a lot due to the development model adopted by the developed capitalist countries and the discrimination and injustice meted out to the poor countries.

“The development model of today’s world is the result of the big developed capitalist countries and the kind of discrimination and injustice done to poor countries like us,” he said.

He said that he had warned about the disasters that could come to Nepal due to climate change when he was the Prime Minister. He said that climate justice should be given to countries like Nepal, which contribute less to carbon emissions but help in carbon control through forests and greenery.

“To give justice to the countries that have not done much in carbon emissions, but who have helped control the carbon emitted by the capitalists and so-called big rich countries because of forests and greenery, the point was to give us billions and trillions to stop the catastrophe caused by climate change in Nepal. But they made a commitment but they did not cooperate as promised,” he said.

He also said that when he was the Prime Minister, he had invited the UN Secretary General to Nepal and apprised him about the melting of the mountains and the effects of climate change on the Nepali people.

“Look at the mountains with your own eyes, the mountains are melting, the white mountains are turning black, and the climate change in Nepal is causing huge damage to the people,” he told the secretary-general.

He stressed that the developed countries should fulfill their responsibility to reduce the impact of climate change. He said that countries including Nepal had to suffer such losses due to the wrong policies adopted by powerful countries. Prachanda also said that he has directed all the party committees, people’s representatives and people’s organizations including YCL to be mobilized for search, rescue and relief in the aftermath of floods.

“As you may have noticed, I was the first person to direct all the committees, people’s representatives, YCL and other people’s organizations to immediately carry out search, rescue and relief through a video message,” he said.

Recalling that YCL Nepal had announced to clean up the flood-affected areas, hand over the materials to the concerned people and assist in the construction of temporary shelters, he expressed happiness for being able to participate in the temporary housing handover ceremony. Meanwhile, Prachanda accused the government of not being prompt enough to construct temporary houses for the flood survivors.

“The readiness of the government, the readiness of the state is a very important thing, but it is not seen here. Whether it is about the construction of temporary houses or now in the matter of rehabilitation and reconstruction, the government has not shown the same urgency as it should be,” he said.

He said that everyone should raise voice to make the government responsible for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the affected people.
