Dhading. The people of Chumnubri-3, Salleri Bazaar, Gorkha, were asleep. Kalpana Gurung’s mobile phone rang. My brother had called from his mother. He started shouting, “Sister, the river is flooded, run away.” While speaking, the house started shaking like an earthquake. There was a loud noise. “We ran upstairs, falling in the dark, dragging the sleeping child,” says Kamala Gurung, who reached Arughat Covered Hall in Gorkha from Salleri, after being rescued by the Nepal Army. “If we had been a minute late to get my brother’s call, we would have died.” ‘
Kamala Gurung also got a call from her father-in-law (maternal uncle) in her sleep in the morning. When she started screaming, ‘The river has flooded, run away immediately’, she pulled the infant son who was sleeping on the bed and started running away. While running uphill, she fell in panic and the baby fell from her hand. But when the neighbor brother who came from behind picked up the child and carried it upstairs, a big disaster averted. Recalling that horrific moment, Kamala says, “When I reached a little higher and looked back, everything was swept away. I didn’t think I would survive, but we survived.” “
In the morning, it seemed like people were screaming outside. When I woke up, I heard the sound of ‘There is a big flood in the river, run, run’. I threw the pillow and ran with the others. “When we heard the sound of the flood, we did not think that we would survive. We thought it would be swept away, but luckily we survived,” says Kopila Gurung, who escaped, “There was money and gold, there was no way to take it out, the main thing was to save our lives.” “
‘I was asleep, I couldn’t see my eyes in the dark. Sometimes I stumbled, sometimes I stumbled. Some ran away naked. They couldn’t even pick up clothes and slippers. There was a house on the hill above Salleri, and we all went and stayed there. Now the helicopter has brought me from there,” Kopila said.
Earlier, there were reports that there was a flood two or three times. “It was noon, we used to look outside and be alert. Now everything has been washed away,” Kamala said. She says that she is going to stay with her relatives in Kathmandu after the floods swept away the settlement.
The flood swept away their house and land so that they could not even have a map. They don’t even have a single pair of clothes to wear. Kalpana said that she was rescued by the army while she was wearing clothes given to her by the people of the neighboring village.
The story of everyone in Salleri Bazaar is as painful and painful as Kalpana, Kamala and Kopila. Some woke up on their own hearing the sound of the flood. Some were picked up by relatives. Since there was a slum in the same place, the news spread quickly between each other. Every phone call to Kalpana and Kamala became the means of saving their lives. If the call from the relatives had not come on time, there would have been a huge loss of life in Salleri. They have remembered God for being able to save their lives even though the flood snatched everything.
There were about
12 households in Salleri. Most of them were inhabited by the Gurung community. The people of Salleri, who ran away to save their lives without even wearing clothes, money, or food, could not save their clothes, money or food. The locals of Salleri, who lost everything, are now going to Kathmandu to take refuge with their relatives after the rescue.
The flood that rose before dawn has completely washed away the Salleri market. Houses, markets and structures of the hydropower project have been destroyed. However, a timely phone call has saved human casualties.
There were camps and shops of the hydropower project in Salleri. Foreign tourists who came to the area to see the natural beauty also stayed there. Now the flood has washed away everything.
