Kathmandu. The Supreme Court has extended the remand of defendants Deepak Bhatt and Shulabh Agrawal, who were arrested in connection with the money laundering case. A division bench of Justices Hemanta Rawal, Dilli Ratna Shrestha and Bidur Koirala gave the verdict to this effect today.

As per the court’s order, the court has extended the custody of defendant Deepak Bhatta for 12 days for the fifth time. Similarly, in the case of another defendant, Shulabh Agrawal, the court has extended the deadline for 12 days for the sixth time. This deadline has been extended with effect from May 23, 2083.

During the investigation, it seems that this decision has been taken in view of the recent amendment to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2064 and the legal provisions made by the new ordinance. More time has been sought as preparation of opinion report of the government attorney, prosecution work and investigation into the alleged offences by the Central Investigation Bureau were still pending.

The joint investigation team is carrying out the investigation considering the seriousness of the case and the process of evidence collection. According to the administrative section of the Special Court, the order for the extension of the deadline has been issued for investigation after following the process as per Sub-section (4) of Section 17 of the Act.
