Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has said that a political party having a national power should not take decision on the basis of short-term profit or loss. Speaking at a discussion programme on the role of Nepali Congress in contemporary politics on the occasion of the 31st establishment day of the Society for Democratic Thought in the country, Thapa said the election results alone would not make the Nepali Congress a national power.

Stating that the Nepali Congress would remain a national force whether it wins, loses or does not take part in the elections, he said the party should have the capacity to give direction rather than reacting to the issues of national politics.

“Nepali Congress is a national force. There is a legal provision that whether it is a national party or not is measured by the results of the election. But for me, the Nepali Congress is a national force whether it wins, loses or does not contest elections. Being a national power, it does not follow what comes out in the headlines. I don’t want to make my decisions and look for shortcuts because of short-term gains and losses. We should have the ability to give direction, not to react to the issues raised in national politics. ’

Thapa said that although the elected government has power, the constitution has fixed its limit. He said although the government has the right to make laws, the constitution has already defined the issue and purpose for which laws should be made.

He said, “The government that has won the election has power, but there is a limit to that power. The Constitution has drawn boundaries. He has the right to make laws, but he also has the right to make laws and what to make them for. ’

He also said that the NC would not be limited to the organization by making it social-oriented. He said he wanted to focus the party on the service of the society. Stating that internal issues of the party were also important, he made it clear that works would be carried out on that as well. Thapa said that a large group of leaders elected from the 14th general convention of the Nepali Congress were now out of the active role of the party and stressed the need to make the aspiring leaders active again with respectable responsibilities. Thapa said that he has proposed to move ahead by taking all along by giving appropriate responsibilities to the person who should be made the senior leader and appropriate responsibility in the required place.

“I want to take the party to the society,” he said. I want to be in the service of the community. I don’t want to concentrate the party only within the party office or the organization. This is not to say that the internal matters within the party are also less important. Those are important and we will work on them. There is a large number of leaders elected from the 14th general convention of the party’s central committee. If there are no leaders, if they want, I want to work together with the senior leaders who should be made senior leaders with respect, who should be placed in the same place, I want to work together, this is my proposal. ’

Also speaking at the programme, Nepali Congress General Secretary Pradip Poudel said the NC should be different from other political parties in terms of ideological clarity. Stating that the Nepali Congress should stand in favour of peaceful change, Poudel said the questions raised against the party should not be left unanswered. Stating that ideology was the main weapon of the party, he said the party was ideologically clear since history.

“Nepali Congress should be different from others in terms of ideology. We should be peaceful advocates for change. We should not leave other people’s questions about us. It is the idea that we are a weapon or a tool. We have been clear in history from the point of view of ideology. Its continuity is a strong place for us to stand ourselves. The Democratic Thought Society has been providing us with significant help in making the Congress clear from the ideological aspect. ’

According to him, the Society for Democratic Thoughts has been providing crucial support to make the NC ideologically clear and stronger. He also stressed the need of continuous dialogue with all democratic ideologies to make NC ideologically sharp.

“In order to make the NC ideologically sharp, we should move ahead by continuously holding dialogue with all those who hold democratic ideologies and have continued to support the NC campaign since its inception,” he said. ’
