Kathmandu. The Association of Economic Journalists-Nepal (NAFIJ) has expressed serious concern over the interim order issued by the Kathmandu District Court against the online media bimapost. com. Issuing a press release on Monday, Nafiz said that the court’s unilateral order to remove two news stories published on insurancepost. com on April 24 and 26, 2002 is against the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of the press and freedom of expression.
According to the press release, the court had issued an interim order to remove the news and comments from the domain of the website on April 24, 2083 without giving an opportunity to the media to a fair hearing.
The NAFIZ has made it clear that the process of complaint and action should be initiated through the Press Council Nepal if there is disagreement with the contents published or disseminated by the media. However, the association has objected saying that the matter was taken directly to the court without entering the council and the order was issued without listening to the views of the media.
Recalling that the preamble of the Constitution of Nepal, 2015 has guaranteed full press freedom, Article 17, 19 and 27 of the constitution has guaranteed freedom of expression, press freedom and people’s right to information as fundamental rights. Nafiz said he was committed to respecting the court and implementing its verdict in a democratic system.
Claiming that the court’s latest order is against the constitution, prevailing legal norms and international practice, the court has urged the court to reconsider the order.
