Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The Government of India has made partial easing in the testing of tea imported from abroad. According to the Tea Board of India (TB) on May 19, 2026, only imported tea will be mandatorily tested for re-export.

Earlier, Tea Board India had implemented mandatory quality testing of all imported tea from May 1. Tea entrepreneurs had been worried that the provision would hamper the export of Nepali tea.

As per the new directive, the tea board will not test the tea imported into India for the time being. According to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the Department of Customs, the samples of this tea will be tested as per the risk management system.

The notice issued by the Tea Board stated that the quality test of tea to be re-exported will continue. The laboratory has also been asked to upload the test report within five days of receiving the sample.

The decision of the Indian authorities is expected to remove the uncertainty seen in the export of Nepali tea to some extent.
