Kathmandu. Biratnagar–Nepali Congress leader Nain Singh Mahar has said that unity, trust and cooperation are the need of the hour for the same. Addressing a broad unity and awareness programme organized by the Nepali Congress Sudurpaschim Province at Dhangadhi on Sunday, he said the NC and the country would be strengthened by unification and not splits.

Stating that NC was not just just a normal political party but a centre of democracy, sacrifice and people’s hope, Mahar clarified that there was no alternative to joining the 15th General Convention with broad unity within the party. “NC is not only an organisation that won elections but also a legacy of movement where thousands of people were jailed, shed blood and sacrificed their lives to save democracy,” he said.

He stressed that the political party should focus on how to unite all in the present day rather than looking for who to defeat in the present day as democratic norms and values would be weakened when such a historic party is weakened.

Leader Mahar described the differences within the Congress as a natural process. “Where there is ideology, there is debate, where there is democracy, there is a difference of opinion, but the heart should not be separated just because there is a difference of opinion,” he said. ’

“The real beauty of the NC is its ability to combine diverse ideologies into a common national goal,” he said. Referring to the Mahabharata, he said history has proved the power of unity.

He said, “In Mahabharata, the Pandavas were less in number, less in power, but there was trust, unity and common goals among them. Although the Kauravas had a huge army and strength, they were divided. ’

“History has shown that ultimately victory comes not by numbers, but by unity,” he said. Recalling the glorious history of the Nepali Congress, Mahar said leaders like BP Koirala, Ganeshman Singh and Krishna Prasad Bhattarai always stood above personal interests and kept the nation and democracy at the centre.

Stating that our ancestors considered ideology to be more important than power, he warned that history would forgive anyone if the party that was built through jail, torture and struggle was weakened today due to personal urging and prejudice. Stating that the country was at a critical juncture, he said the problems of youth migration, increasing women’s participation in the country’s development, unemployment, education, health and inflation have added to the frustration among the people.

“Today, millions of youths are forced to go abroad in search of their future, farmers are frustrated, students are confused and people’s trust in political leadership is waning,” he said. ’

He made it clear that unity within the party was not only the need of the party but also of the country at such a critical time. Mahar urged all leaders and cadres to rise above factionalism, arrogance, urges and personal interest to strengthen the organization.

“We may be of different opinions and ideologies, but our ultimate goal is the same: to protect democracy, to strengthen NC and to build a prosperous Nepal,” he said. Although the streams of the rivers are different, the ocean is ultimately the same. ’
