124 road accidents killed in 124 road accidents in April

Kathmandu. According to Nepal Police, 124 road accidents were recorded across the country in the month of April due to drunken driving. Twelve people were killed and 174 others injured in the accident.

A total of 37 road accidents took place in the Kathmandu Valley in the last six months of April and two people were killed and 50 others injured, said Nepal Police Spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General of Police, Abhinarayan Kafle.

According to him, two people died and 53 were injured in 35 road accidents in Koshi Province. 27 injured in 20 road accidents in Madhes Province One person died and 19 were injured in 12 accidents in Bagmati Province this morning.

Similarly, four people died and three were injured in five accidents in Gandaki state. Three people were killed and 15 others injured in nine accidents in Lumbini province this morning.

Similarly, three persons were injured in three accidents in Karnali Province while four others were injured in three accidents in Sudurpaschim State.

Stating that the risk of road accidents has increased due to drunkenness, Kafle urged all drivers to follow the traffic rules. According to him, the trend of drunk driving is particularly high during night, public holidays and on the occasion of festivals. He said that drunken driving is not only a serious legal offense but also a very risky act for human life.

The Traffic Police has made the drug control campaign more effective in recent days. Traffic checking has been tightened especially in urban areas, highways, busy intersections and at night, police said. Chief of Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nawaraj Adhikari said the drivers would be punished as per the law and public awareness programmes have been conducted.

He further said, “The Traffic Police has been conducting public awareness programme urging drivers and members of the general public to be responsible for safe and drunk driving.” According to him, the risk of accidents is high as the driver’s decision-making ability becomes weak, it becomes difficult to control the vehicle and the tendency to drive in high speed after consuming alcohol. He urged all drivers to be vigilant while driving and follow traffic rules.
