Kathmandu. The government has set new qualifications for colleges that want to run educational programs in Nepal by taking affiliation to foreign universities. The foreign universities granting affiliation must be among the top 1,000 universities in the world.
According to the Foreign Educational Programs (Operation and Regulation) Regulations, 2083 BS approved by the Council of Ministers, the government can collaborate only with international quality universities. Earlier, the quality standards were relatively flexible, but now it has been further stringent.
The regulation also mentions that the college concerned should have completed two stages of quality assurance and accreditation process, prove adequate physical infrastructure, skilled manpower and educational capacity. The student admission quota will be determined only on these grounds.
According to education experts, the new system is expected to discourage substandard foreign affiliation programs, increase students’ chances of getting international standard education and increase confidence in higher education.
However, some of the existing colleges will have to invest more and make structural reforms to meet the set standards. The government has made arrangements to give a certain time to such colleges and if the criteria are not met, they will stop the renewal of affiliation, ban the admission of new students or take other legal action.
