Shrawan Sankranti: Torch lighting of waterfalls still alive in Karnali

Mugu. Karnali Province is marked with traditional rituals by lighting torches in different parts of Karnali state today. 

With the development of modern lifestyle and technology, some old rituals have disappeared, but this original tradition is still alive in the rural settlements of Karnali.

In the rural areas of Mugu, Humla, Jumla, Kalikot, Dolpa, Dailekh, Jajarkot, Surkhet, Salyan and Rukum West, it is customary to light torches on the evening of Saun Sankranti.

This tradition, which has been going on for generations, includes children, youths and senior citizens. Bhim

Chand Hamal, a local, said that the tradition of exchanging greetings with the light of the torch throughout the village, meeting relatives, eating handkin and milk-curd and celebrating the festival collectively would further strengthen social unity and harmony. 

There is also a tradition of holding fairs at various religious and tourist places in Karnali on the occasion of Saun Sankranti.

Local fairs and religious activities are held especially in Rara Lake, Lakhupatan, Gamgi Chaur, Mili and Bajathala of Mugu, Chandannath area of Jumla, Limi area of Humla, among other places. 

Locals have said that due to the modern lifestyle, the original culture of lighting torches of some waterfalls is still being preserved.
