After the complaint and video, monitoring was done at Nepal Children’s Organization, 20 children were rescued
Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minority and Social Security rescued 20 children in the first phase after monitoring complaints about the plight of children and the video materials.
According to the Ministry, a joint team of the Child Helpline (104) and the Ministry carried out an on-site inspection at the children’s home.
The monitoring team found that the sanitation of the children’s home was very poor, the toilet and bathroom were unhygienic and slippery, the building was waterlogged, and children of different age groups were kept in a single place. The ministry has concluded that such a situation is a serious risk from the point of view of health and safety of children.
The Ministry has been issuing directives from time to time to improve the physical condition of Nepal Children’s Organization, manage sanitation and manage children’s settlement.
For this, the concerned sides were called to the Ministry and discussions. However, the Ministry has initiated the rescue process immediately after carrying out on-site monitoring as the expected improvement did not improve despite the directives and requests.
According to the ministry, videos related to the situation have been received from local stakeholders, various individuals and some employees of the children’s home in recent days.
The videos showed waterlogging inside the building, poor sanitation, and the risk of an epidemic. Some of the employees also revealed the real condition of the children’s home through social media.
Based on the complaint and video material, the Ministry in coordination with the Child Helpline (104) relocated 20 children below two years of age to safer places in the first phase.
The rescued children include 12 boys and eight girls. The Ministry has stated that it is coordinating with the bodies concerned for their protection, health check-up, necessary care and rehabilitation.
The Ministry has already started the necessary paperwork and legal work related to the incident. Necessary decision and monitoring would be continued by assessing the condition of the remaining children keeping the best interests of the children at the centre g.
