Renovated Mahakal Sattal Inauguration at a cost of 8 crore 95 lakh

Kathmandu. Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has completed the reconstruction of the Chaughera Sattal in the premises of Mahankal Temple which was damaged by the earthquake of 2072 BS. Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Sunita Dangol, inaugurated the Sattal built at the cost of Rs 89.5 million. 

Speaking at the inauguration program, Acting Chief Dangol said that it was the common responsibility of all to protect the heritages reconstructed with taxpayers’ investment and stressed that such structures should be used for religious, cultural and social activities rather than commercial purposes.

She said the metropolis was ready to hand over the structures to the Guthi Sansthan with clear planning and guarantee of conservation. 

“We want to respect everyone’s role,” she said.

We are ready to hand over the structures as the officials of the corporation have said. But we want to be clear about how it will be used. We cannot agree to carry out commercial activities in such monuments built with taxpayer investment. Religious, cultural and social activities should be carried out in such areas. Tourism Committee, Ashaman Sangat, said that the metropolis was investing in the preservation and reconstruction of heritages that are under the responsibility of other bodies.

 

‘We are careful not to let the spirit of the heritage area die. We love heritage as much as we love others. Referring to the lack of coordination among the bodies responsible for heritage conservation, he said that it was difficult to carry out works at times. But we cannot see any heritage crumbling just because there is no equipment, skills and knowledge,” he said.

According to the Department of

Heritage and Tourism, the initial cost estimate for the reconstruction was Rs 10,10,79,000. Binayak-SP-Bohora JV was awarded the responsibility for the construction through a public procurement process. After the variation, the project was completed at a cost of Rs 8,94,46,170.

The 583.81 square meter area of Chaughera Sattal has been reconstructed on the basis of historical photographs of 1997 B. S. using traditional construction materials and styles. The building has nine rooms on the ground floor, three meeting rooms, one room, one storeroom on the first floor and a bugle on the upper part.
