. KATHMANDU: Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supply, Gauri Kumari Yadav, has urged consumers to purchase cooking gas only as per the need and not to hoard unnecessarily, saying the problem of distribution of LP Gas seen in the market would be resolved within a few days.
Responding to the queries raised by lawmakers in the meeting of the House of Representatives on Friday, Minister Yadav said that although the import and distribution of LPG cylinders has been sufficient as compared to the previous year, the demand for full cylinders has increased in one go.
According to him, the Ministry is coordinating with the Nepal Oil Corporation, LPG industrialists and other stakeholders to make the supply and distribution system more effective. Market monitoring has been intensified and reforms have been carried out to make the import, storage and distribution of gas transparent and predictable. Currently
, 58 LP gas industries are operating across the country, with a total storage capacity of 10,166 metric tons and around 17.5 million cylinders in the market, said Minister Yadav. In the fiscal year 2082÷83, 520,525 metric tons of cooking gas was imported.
According to her, the work of developing the LP gas cylinder tracking system has been started as per the directive of the committee and the details of the cylinders distributed by the industries through Google form have been collected and made public on the ministry’s website.
She also said that efforts have been made through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to increase the import quota of LP gas from India from 49,500 metric tonnes to 60,000 metric tonnes for three months.
Minister Yadav said that the NOC has formed a ‘Quick Response Team’ and has been addressing the complaints of non-availability of cooking gas immediately.
According to him, 37,100 LPG cylinders have been sent to the market on August 4 and 40,
954 on August 7. The consumers can purchase petroleum gas from Nepal Oil Corporation, Nepal Gas (Balaju), Saibaba Gas (Kalanki) and Kalimati and Jadibuti counters of National Trading at Teku.
The Department
of Commerce, Supply and Consumer Protection has so far monitored more than 45 gas depots and coordinated with the District Administration Office and the provincial offices of Nepal Oil Corporation in the districts outside the Kathmandu Valley, Minister Yadav said.
Urging the government to distribute cooking gas on priority to senior citizens, people with disabilities, pregnant women and students, she directed the dealers and dealers to provide cooking gas on priority to consumers who do not have alternative cylinders.
