. President Ram Chandra Poudel has said the constitution has ensured the rights and interests of all communities by internalizing unity in diversity.
Addressing a programme organized by the Commission for Indigenous Nationalities on the occasion of the 32nd International Day
of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, President Poudel said that Nepal is a country with multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-religious and multi-cultural characteristics.
He said that the unique identity and culture of the indigenous nationalities that have been living since time immemorial is the national pride of Nepal.
He said, “Indigenous peoples are the sons of this earth who have an unbreakable and spiritual connection with water, land and natural resources. Stating that it was the responsibility of the government to ensure meaningful participation of indigenous nationalities in the policy-making and decision-making of the state, President Poudel said that the representation of indigenous nationalities at the local level was encouraging at 36.8 per cent. He said that the need of the hour was to gradually increase access to education.
Stating that Nepal has been standing in the forefront of the rights of indigenous peoples in the international forum, he said Nepal has been in the forefront of the International Convention on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (ILO).
Convention No. He said it was the first country in South Asia to ratify ‘169’.
“We are fully committed to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Convention on Biological Diversity.
These international documents recognize the rights and cultural autonomy of indigenous peoples. President Poudel said that the need of the hour was to commercialize the traditional knowledge, skills and technology of indigenous nationalities and make them economically empowered.।
