Good governance and prosperity challenging if economic growth is not inclusive: Dr Bhattarai Bhatta
Kathmandu. Vice-Chairman of the National Planning Commission Dr. KATHMANDU — Punakar Bhatta has said that the goal of good governance, social justice and prosperity will be challenging until comprehensive and inclusive economic growth is achieved.
Addressing the ‘National Good Governance Summit 2026’ organized by Good Governance Protection Forum here today, Vice-Chair Bhatta said the 16th National Plan has prioritized good governance, social justice and prosperity as the main themes. He stressed the need to connect different sections, regions, communities and geography of the society in the mainstream of economic growth and development.
He was of the view that it would be difficult to achieve the goals of good governance, social justice and prosperity if the benefits of economic development did not reach all sections and regions.
‘The 16th National Plan highlights three major issues. One is good governance, the second is social justice and the third is prosperity,” he said, adding, “As long as we are not able to attract broad-based economic growth, until we are able to connect different sections, regions, communities and geography of the society in the mainstream of economic growth and economic development, there will be challenges to materialize our dream of good governance, social justice and prosperity.” “
Vice-President Bhatta said that policies should be formulated keeping in mind the national and international situation for the economic and social development of Nepal. He said that Nepal should formulate its policies, programmes and budget by analyzing the various major factors influencing the global economy and world politics.
He said that climate change is one of the main drivers affecting the global economy and politics.
Stating that the impact of climate change was serious across the world, he underscored Nepal’s need to keep it in top priority.
‘I think we should look at three or four contexts. “In terms of where we stand in terms of the international situation, there are four main drivers that are driving the global economy and world politics,” he said.
He said that the 16th National Plan has also given high priority to the issue of climate change.
He also stressed the need to pay attention to environmental risks while formulating government’s policies, programmes and budget.
‘The issue of climate change has been raised with great importance around the world. The issue of climate change has also been given equal priority in the 16th Plan,” he said, adding, “Environmental risks can also arise in the policies, programs and budget programs that we formulate.” Bhatta stressed on the need for Nepal to pursue economic development, social justice, good governance and environmental protection in the face of changing international situation Given.
