Mechi Highway obstructed for months: Landslides hit Maikhola-Rajduwali section

Ilam. The Mechi Highway, which is considered the main lifeline of the eastern hills, has been obstructed for the past one month. Vehicular movement along Ilam, Panchthar and Taplejung has been affected due to the complete closure of the road due to landslides along the Maikhola-Rajduwali section.

The highway has not been brought into operation due to the recurrence of landslides and landslides along with incessant rains.

The road blockade has left the passengers stranded and the transportation of daily essentials has been severely affected. Patients have been compelled to travel in risky conditions as even essential services like ambulances have been affected.

According to the locals, the problem has worsened due to lack of proper arrangement of alternative route.

“Even in normal circumstances, one has to cross the landslide by walking, the problem increases even when sick or at night,” said Ishwarlal Chipalu, a local.

Although the Road Division Office, Ilam has said that the work is going on to clear the landslide, the work has been delayed due to incessant rainfall and weak geography.

Complaints are increasing that such problems are repeated every year as the concerned bodies do not pay attention to the long-term solution.

The prolonged closure of the Mechi highway has also affected the economic activities of the eastern hills.

According to local traders, there is a shortage of goods in the market and prices have increased due to the halt in the supply.

Locals have demanded that the government and the concerned bodies should immediately pay attention to the construction of alternative roads, permanent bridges and long-term structures.
