. President of Nepal Automobile Importers and Manufacturers Association Ritu Singh Vaidya said that a stable government policy, modern infrastructure and collaboration between the government and private sector are necessary to make Nepal’s transport sector sustainable, safe and technology-friendly.
She expressed the view that mobility in Nepal should be understood not only with the use of vehicles but also as an issue related to education, health, employment and market access.
According to him, the development of transportation system would not only expand economic activities but also play a significant role in improving the living standard of the citizens.
Stating that the automobile sector is undergoing rapid technological changes around the world, Baidya said that Nepal should adapt its policies, tax system and regulations accordingly.
He said that both the government and the industry should study deeply about the new technology vehicles.
‘With the rapid development of technology, the automobile market is undergoing a big change. Both the government and the industry need to gain a deeper understanding of the new technology and clarify the tax system, classification and regulation,” she said.
She also made it clear that NAIMA is ready to provide technical support and expertise related to the new technology of vehicles.
According to Baidya, the major requirements of Nepal’s transport sector are safe roads, clear traffic rules, reliable charging infrastructure, modern vehicle testing centers and skilled manpower. She said that special attention should be given to expansion of charging infrastructure and production of quality technical human resources at a time when the use of electric vehicles is increasing.
He stressed on the need to give equal priority to road safety as the number of vehicles is increasing continuously.
She stressed on the need of making road accidents, traffic management and enforcement of safety standards effective along with the expansion of transport sector.
According to Vaidya, the government should not only look at transport as a luxury item or a means of revenue collection but also as an important basis for national development.
According to him, the investment made in transport infrastructure will have a direct positive impact on production, trade, tourism and employment.
Similarly, she said that a stable and long-term policy is necessary to create investment-friendly environment. He stressed the need for a clear and predictable policy arrangement as the frequent changes and ambiguity in the policy create confusion among the entrepreneurs and investors.
Vaidya also stressed on strengthening the collaboration between the government and the private sector to encourage automobile companies that have been investing, contributing tax and creating jobs for decades.
According to him, Nepal’s transportation sector could be made modern, safe and sustainable only through collaboration between public and private sectors.
