. Students and job aspirants in Jharkhand have been protesting against alleged irregularities in examinations and recruitment of government employees. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Tuesday staged protests from the old assembly to the new one.
The aspirants of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) have been agitating for a long time. They have demanded the cancellation of the JSSC Combined Bachelor’s Level (CGL) examination, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the alleged irregularities in the examination, and reforms in the government recruitment process. On Monday, the students of JPSC and JSSC had also marched towards the Vidhan Sabha.
Police used batons and water cannons to take the demonstrators under control. Since then, the student movement has become a more political issue.
Leader of
the Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Babulal Marandi has said that the voice of the students cannot be suppressed by force. He claimed that the main demand of the students was a CBI probe and an impartial investigation was needed to bring the guilty to justice and acquit the innocent. Accusing the government of trying to suppress the students’ agitation instead of accepting their demands, he warned that the agitation would spread to villages of Jharkhand.
Marandi said the BJP Jharkhand has called for a statewide shutdown on Tuesday in support of the students over the use of lathicharge and tear gas by the administration during Monday’s protest. Meanwhile, Mahua Maji, MP of the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), accused the BJP of politically provoking the students.
She claimed that the government has accepted most of the demands of the students and was studying the remaining subjects.
According to Maji, about 98 percent of the demands of the students have been accepted while the remaining 2 percent is not under the direct jurisdiction of the government.
He said that the decision to cancel the JSSC-CGL examination could not be taken immediately as the matter related to the examination is sub judice in the court.
She said that canceling the CGL exam could be an injustice to other youths participating in the exam. She said that Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has also assured to study the demands of the students.
Security has been tightened in Ranchi after the student agitation took a political turn.
Political tension has also escalated in Jharkhand as students and job aspirants continue to protest demanding transparency and fair investigation in the examination and recruitment process. ANI
