Fair price shops are operating in 44 districts
Kathmandu. The fair price shop, which the government has been operating targeting the Dashain and Tihar festivals in the past years, is to be brought into operation about a month before this year.
The Food and Trade Company Limited (FMTCCL) is set to open fair price shops in 193 places of 44 districts of the country from today with an aim to provide relief to consumers in daily essentials throughout the year.
On the occasion of the company’s seventh anniversary
, a sales outlet is set to come into operation in Singha Durbar from today. According to the company, the fair price shop is going to be operated sooner this year than in the past keeping in mind the demand for daily essentials in the market during the festival season and the price may go up.
Consumers are expected to be able to buy food and other essential items at subsidized rates for a long time by bringing such shops into operation before the start of the main shopping period of Dashain and Tihar.
Consumers will be able to take direct benefit of the government subsidies when such shops are operating in different geographical areas. The discount of five rupees per kg is expected to provide some relief to the families who buy large quantities of food especially for the festivals.
According to the Food and Trading Company, the fair price shops will provide discount of up to Rs 5 per kg and Rs five per liter on daily consumables.
This is expected to provide direct relief to the consumers who buy essential food items such as rice, lentils, legumes, etc.
According to the company, rice, lentils, legumes and various food items required for daily consumption will be sold in the fair price shop.
