Budget and Monetary Policy have made the automobile business easier: NADA President

NADA Automobiles Association of Nepal (NADA) is going to present the NADA Auto Show 2026 to be held at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu from August 23 to 29.
According to Surendra Kumar Upreti, President of NADA, various aspects of automobile sector will be brought under one roof, including automobile spare parts, lubricants, tires, insurance, banking and financial services, after-sales services and new technology.”NADA is not just an exhibition for business,” Upreti said, adding, “Our main objective is to show the consumers the direction of the automobile sector in the coming days.”
According to him, there will be more than 200 stalls in this year’s show. Various brands are preparing to launch new models and products. Details of which brands will launch new products at what time will be announced by the organizers in a separate press conference.
In this year’
s NADA Auto Show, special priority will be given to Nepali products and vehicles assembled in Nepal. According to Upreti, the vehicles manufactured and assembled in Nepal will be put on display.
According to him, preparations are also being made to unveil fully produced Yatri motorcycles in Nepal.
According to him, priority has been given to local products in the expo with the objective of encouraging investment made by Nepali industries in vehicle production and assembly.
Stating that the possibilities of vehicle assembly and production were expanding in Nepal, Upreti said that multinational companies could be attracted to Nepal if long-term policy and stability were given to such industries. The share of electric vehicles (EVs) in Nepal’s automobile market has increased in recent years.
According to Uprety, consumers are increasingly attracted to EVs as compared to petrol and diesel-based vehicles.
However, with the increasing number of EVs, the lack of adequate charging infrastructure is one of the major challenges, he said.
He said that even though more than two thousand charging stations have been built across Nepal, the current infrastructure is not enough to accommodate the growing EVs.
Electricity importers are installing fast chargers in different places as per the need and Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is expanding charging infrastructure in different places and highways of the country.
“It’s not that charging stations haven’t been built, but it’s not enough to meet the current needs,” he said. According to Upreti, although EV is the main trend in the current market, the NADA Auto Show has been trying to incorporate new technologies that may be coming in the next five to 10 years as automobile technology is constantly changing.
Chairman Upreti said that Nepal’
s automobile market is on the path of gradual improvement. According to him, the market has started showing signs of improvement in recent times. He said that the budget and monetary policy recently brought by the government have made the import of vehicles and business easier.
According to him, the latest budget has addressed the issues related to tax, import and financial facilities that the automobile sector has been collecting since long.
He also stressed the need of easing loan flow from banks and financial institutions for large vehicles. He also demanded to increase the loan-to-value (LTV) ratio for the purchase of vehicles.
“If there is an arrangement to increase the LTV ratio and make it easier to buy vehicles and give concessions on interest rates for a certain period, it can make the market more dynamic,” he said. According to him, this will make it easier for consumers who want to buy vehicles and the money in the banking system can also be mobilized in the automobile sector.
Stating that investment is increasing in the automobile assembly industry in Nepal, Uprety said that the government’s policy was important to give long-term stability to the automobile assembly industry.
According to him, the assembly of two-wheelers and the share of local production in Nepal is significant.
He said that more investment could be brought in in the coming days if clear and stable policies were given to such industries.
According to him, if there is an environment for production and assembly in Nepal, multinational companies can also be attracted to invest in Nepal.
Upreti said that the NADA Auto Show is not only related to the automobile sector but also to the overall economy.
He said that many sectors including the sale of vehicles, after-sales services, insurance, banking and financial services, media, transport, hotel and food business will be directly or indirectly connected to it.
“The auto show is not just a place to sell vehicles, but the entire ecosystem associated with it is in one place,” he said.
According to him, the automobile sector has been making significant contribution to the government’s revenue collection and the country’s GDP.
Therefore, the automobile sector needs policy stability and facilitation.
Upreti said that NADA has also emphasized on road safety and skill development .
He said that the road safety awareness programme has been conducted in collaboration with the traffic police.
He said that the drivers are being made aware about the use of unnecessary horns, not to overtake risky and to operate the vehicle safely.
Similarly, skill-oriented training is being conducted in collaboration with various organizations to produce skilled human resources required in the automobile sector, he said. Efforts are also being made to connect the trained human resources with employment, he added.
