. KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) former President Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that he returned to Nepal not to gain power, but to strengthen national unity.
Issuing a statement on social media on Thursday after returning home from the health check-up, Deuba expressed gratitude to all who cared about his health and wished for his speedy recovery. Deuba has said that the Nepali Congress should internalize the changes demanded by the younger generation.
He also said that he was of the view that the genuine demands of the Jenji movement in August should be addressed.
“Change does not mean negating the struggles and contributions of the past,” he said, adding that the struggle of his generation for democracy, freedom and the rights of different communities should be respected. Stating that the incumbent government should address the people’s aspirations for change, Deuba said the government should move ahead to fulfill the people’s aspirations by rising above political prejudices. Deuba has stressed the need to resolve the disagreements and frustrations seen in the Nepali Congress immediately.
NC should strengthen nationality and democracy by forging consensus and collaboration with other political parties, he said.
Stating that the constitution was attained through a long struggle and sacrifice of the Nepalis, he stressed the need for its protection and amendment on the basis of national consensus.
The younger generation should move forward, but it is not appropriate to make the comments that the older and experienced generation are completely bad,” Deuba said. “It is my responsibility to pass on my long political experience to the new generation,” he said.
Deuba has said that he has returned “not to gain power, but to strengthen national unity”. Stressing the need of choosing the path of reconciliation rather than the path of revenge, he insisted on the need of cooperation from all sides for national unity.
