Colombia Earthquake Update: Eight rescued alive after 48 hours from rubble
Kathmandu Colombia: Eight people have been rescued alive from the rubble of a powerful earthquake in Colombia two days ago. An earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale struck at 7:34 a. m. local time on Monday.
The earthquake completely destroyed a residential building called ‘Torres del Limonar’ in the city of Cali.
Dozens of people were buried in the rubble when the building collapsed. Rescue workers and volunteers have been carrying out search and rescue operations continuously.
During the first 48 hours, the rescue team focused on searching for survivors.
During this period, eight people were rescued safely. However, with the passage of time, the chances of finding the survivors have decreased, so the rescue team has now started paying more attention to the search and management of the body of the deceased.
Colombia’s President Abelardo de la Espryla said on Wednesday that the death toll from the quake had risen to 265.
In addition, 3,494 people were injured and 496 are still missing. According to the president, more than 11,000 houses have been completely destroyed across the country. More than 53,000 people have been directly affected by this natural disaster.
The government has said it has intensified relief and rehabilitation works in the affected areas.
Rescue teams, security personnel and volunteers are still searching for the missing.
The worst damage from the quake was in cities in western Colombia, including Cali.
Authorities are continuing their efforts to set up temporary shelters and arrange food, drinking water and health services in the affected areas. Locals have been urged to remain alert as aftershocks are also occurring after the earthquake. CCTV
