Nepali Congress welcomes Deuba’s return home, draws government’s attention on press freedom and Rolpa landslide
Lalitpur.KATHMANDU: A meeting of the Nepali Congress Central Working Committee has extended best wishes to party immediate past President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to return home from Singapore following the health check-up.
The meeting presided over by party president Gagan Kumar Thapa also expressed the belief that Deuba would play a guardianly role in institutionalizing the legitimate changes brought in the party while recognising his contribution to building the history of the party and the democratic movement.
The meeting also expressed serious concern over the arrest of former Chair of Press Council Nepal and editor of Jana Aastha Weekly, Kishor Shrestha, in the middle of the night, a search at the office of the newspaper and handcuffing while presenting him before the court.
“The arrest of journalists, raiding media offices and handcuffing them by bypassing the constitutional process and established process are wrong and undesirable,” the statement reads.
Taking the incident as an attempt to create psychological terror on the free press, the NC said that prejudice and vindictive behavior by the state mechanism is unacceptable.
The Nepali Congress has also expressed its displeasure over the indecent and unparliamentary behavior meted out to the lawmakers of the ruling party at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
The NC has directed its lawmakers to maintain high parliamentary decorum, saying the language, style and behaviour of the people’s representatives in the parliament and parliamentary committees should be disciplined.
The meeting expressed sorrow over the loss of lives in the landslide occurred at Thawang rural municipality-5, Kotalbada in Rolpa district.
Paying tributes to those killed in the incident, the NC has urged the government to make arrangements for relief and rehabilitation of the victims’ families, provide treatment to the injured and intensify search for the missing persons.
A total of 18 central committee members put forth their views in the meeting today.
