KATHMANDU: Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel has bid farewell to the Nepali karate team participating in the 20th Asian Games to be held in Japan.
Minister Pokharel along with other officials reached Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) on Friday to bid farewell to the karate team. On the occasion, Minister Pokharel extended best wishes to the athletes participating in the Asian Games representing the country and urged them to focus on their excellent performance. He urged the players not to take unnecessary pressure on the results of the tournament even though the state has high expectations from them.
“You have gone to play representing the country’s flag. I would like to thank everyone for that,” he said, “Do not think about the result now, give your best game and come back with a new experience from there.” Minister Pokharel made it clear that the state’s respect and attitude will not change on the basis of the results achieved by the players in the competition. He said that the tendency of welcoming only when winning and ignoring them when they lose should end.
Minister Pokharel said that he has found from the interaction with various players that the players do not have high expectations from the state. He said that the players only expect respect from the state and their hard work. He said that the government has taken some reforms to honor the players. He said that the arrangement of providing ‘VIP access’ at the airport to the players participating in international competitions representing the country is one of the beginnings.
‘The players who represent the country should also get the same respect as any other distinguished person. Till now, the players used to sit in a queue like ordinary passengers and carry their own luggage. We have changed this and made arrangements for VIP entry for the players,” said Minister Pokharel.
He also said that they will try to reach the airport to bid farewell to the players participating in international tournaments in the coming days. Minister Pokharel wished the karate team for their best performance while representing the country, saying, “Represent the country, give your best performance. Whatever the result, our respect for you will remain the same. Go, give your best. Best wishes to all of you.”
