Taplejung. Football legend Lionel Messi has been remembered with special honor ahead of the final match of the fourth International Taplejung Gold Cup. Before the start of the final on Friday, a banner with Messi’s picture was displayed on the ground to honor his contribution to world football.

The organizers praised Messi’s 21-year-long international football journey and praised his contribution to Argentina. The 39-year-old Messi recently announced his retirement from international football.

He has scored 125 goals in 207 games for Argentina and has also made a record of participating in six World Cups, including the World Cup title. He is Argentina’s highest player and highest goal scorer.

Salahesh Youth Club of Siraha defeated Phidim Sporting Club of Panchthar 1-0 in the final to defend the title. Salahesh received a cash prize of Rs 7,02,083 along with a trophy, medal and certificate. The runner-up Phidim Sporting Club received a cash prize of Rs 3,52,083 along with trophies, medals and certificates. Salhesh defeated Georgia United Football Club, Kalimpong of India 2-0 in the semi-finals, while Phidim defeated Jhapa XI 1-0 to reach the final for the first time. Salhesh, who has been playing the final for the second consecutive season, defeated Church Boys Club Lalitpur 2-0 last year and defended the title this year as well. Anukesh Sherma of Phidim was declared the best player of the tournament. He received the motorcycle award of Bajaj Company. Sanish Shrestha of Salahesh was declared the best goalkeeper, Abishek Limbu the best defender and Sushil Yadav the best midfielder. The best players in different categories were awarded Rs 15,000 each. Member of the House of Representatives, Kshitij Thebe, Koshi State Assembly member and former Minister for Industry, Agriculture and Cooperatives Khagen Singh Hangam among others distributed the prizes to the winners. Eight teams had taken part in this edition of the competition, which is held every year on the occasion of the Lakheja festival.

Solhesh, Phidim, Jhapa-11, Georgian United Kalimpong, Chitlang Football Club, Satdobato Football Club, Nepal Police Club and the organizer Taplejung-11 took part in the tournament.
