Kathmandu. Minister for Foreign Affairs Shishir Khanal and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea Cho Hyun held important discussions on the ongoing search, rescue and relief operations in Nepal in the aftermath of the recent devastating floods in Nepal.
During the bilateral meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Singha Durbar on Sunday, serious discussions were held on the search and rescue of the citizens of Republic of Korea who went missing following the devastating floods in the Bhotekoshi River on August 26. On the occasion, Foreign Minister Khanal expressed his gratitude to the government of the Republic of Korea for sending an inter-agency rapid response team and Korea Disaster Relief Team to the flood-affected areas to assist in search and rescue operations. He also expressed his gratitude for the humanitarian assistance and relief materials provided by the Government of Korea to the flood-stricken people. Stating that the government of
Nepal has accorded top priority to the post-disaster reconstruction, Minister Khanal said that the reconstruction would be carried out in accordance with the ‘Build Back Better’ concept and sustainable and safe infrastructure construction in order to minimize the damage from such disasters in the future. He also expressed the belief that there would be continuous support from the Republic of Korea in this regard.
On the occasion, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic
of Korea Choe Hyun expressed his government’s willingness to provide necessary support in Nepal’s post-disaster reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts.
Stating that the international community had historic responsibility for the loss of life, property and infrastructure suffered by countries like Nepal due to climate change, he stressed the need for collaboration between Nepal and the Republic of Korea to make the world community more sensitive about the impact of climate change and the disasters caused by it. He also stressed the need to jointly raise voice about the challenges and losses faced by countries like Nepal due to climate change in international forums including the United Nations Climate Change Conference. of Korea also pledged to raise its voice regarding the financial support that Nepal should get from the international community for the damage caused by climate change.
During the meeting, the two Foreign Ministers pledged to continue close cooperation to take the bilateral relations to a new height by further consolidating and broadening the long-standing friendly relations, mutual trust, understanding and cooperation between the two countries.
