The Nagma-Gamgadhi and Jhyari-Gamgadhi road sections along the Karnali Highway have been completely obstructed for the past 20 days due to landslides triggered by incessant rains. Mugu district has been cut off from the national road network due to its remote geography and incessant rainfall. <\/p>\n Due to the long suspension of transportation, there is an acute shortage of essential commodities such as foodstuffs, cooking LP gas, construction materials and medicines in the surrounding rural areas including the district headquarters Gamgadhi. The kitchen and hotel business of the general public have also been badly affected due to the shortage of gas and food grains in the market. <\/p>\n Hundreds of cargo vehicles carrying daily essentials and construction materials from Nepalgunj and Surkhet have been stranded on the road due to the road obstruction.<\/p>\n The vehicles of local traders along with 9 trucks carrying rice of the Food Management and Trading Company Limited from Rajapur were stranded between Jhyari Khola and Talcha. The drivers and helpers who have been stuck on the road for weeks are forced to live in difficult shelters on the road and in temporary huts. <\/p>\n “Apples worth Rs 20 to 25 lakh that were to be exported out of Mugu have started rotting due to the closure of the road. We traders have to bear losses worth lakhs of rupees after the apples started rotting and smelling,” said Karna Bahadur Budha, a local trader. <\/p>\n Locals have alleged that the landslide took place due to the indiscriminate ‘double cutting’ by the contractors in the name of road upgradation. Similarly, Narendra Bahadur Shahi, a local, said that not only the road but also the surrounding settlements and land are at high risk due to the unsystematic bulldozer menace. <\/p>\n ‘The landslide caused by the haphazard digging of the road washed away the house and land. Now my family of 6 is completely in distress. On the one hand, we have become homeless, on the other hand, the road division and administration have not deployed enough machines and manpower to clear the landslide on time,” he said. <\/p>\n However, the Road Project Office said that the work has been delayed due to adverse weather conditions and difficult geography. Nandaraj Giri, chief of the Nagma-Gamgadhi-Nakchelagna road project, said that the machines are being used continuously to remove the landslide in the vulnerable areas. <\/p>\n “There has been some delay in clearing the landslide on the road due to incessant rains, complex topography and the delay of the contractor. However, the work of removing the landslide is being done by using machines continuously in the vulnerable areas.
