Gagan Thapa urges President Thapa to study Girija Prasad’s economic policy <\/p>\n
Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has urged the GP Koirala Foundation to study the economic policies of former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala. <\/p>\n
Speaking at the AGM and leadership handover program of the GP Koirala Foundation on Friday, Thapa said that although the political contribution of Girija Prasad Koirala was talked about, there was not enough discussion about his economic policy. He described the period from 2048 BS to 2051 BS as an important period from the point of view of economic development of Nepal. Thapa remembered Girija Prasad Koirala as a leader, guardian and mentor of his political work. <\/p>\n
He said, “Ganeshmanji, Kisunji became the characters of political ideals for us. BP Koirala was the center of faith. However, whether it is Bishwa Prakash Sharma, Guru Ghimire, Pradip Poudel, Girija Prasad Koirala has undoubtedly played the role of leader, guardian and guru of political work for all. “<\/p>\n
Girija Prasad Koirala has formed a political personality and recalled that he used to associate with him, interact with him and also debate politically. According to him, although BP Koirala was the center of faith for the Congress, Girija Prasad Koirala remained in the role of a political guardian for the cadres. <\/p>\n
In the program, Thapa also remembered the support given by Sujata Koirala at a crucial juncture in his political life. He said that Sujata Koirala was very supportive of him when he needed guardianship in the politics of Nepal Student Union. <\/p>\n
Thapa said, “When I was in the politics of Nepal Student Union, I needed a lot of support. Sushil Koirala wanted to make Mahendra Sharma, Sujata Didi wanted to make me. <\/p>\n
He said that the decision to allow the private sector to enter the sectors of electricity, air, telephone, medical college and banking was a significant policy change at that time. <\/p>\n
Thapa also described the reforms in the tax system, including the Value Added Tax (VAT), as important decisions of that time. According to him, although these decisions were risky in the short term, they had prepared the basis for taking Nepal’s economy on a new path. <\/p>\n
He also said that the Congress had to face political criticism for a long time due to economic liberalization. Recalling that the Congress has been accused of ‘selling industries’, Thapa said that the party has paid the political price for it. <\/p>\n
However, he said that Girija Prasad Koirala gave priority to the economic future of the country rather than the immediate political gains. <\/p>\n
This is the reason why there is a need to study more about the economic policy and decisions of Girija Prasad Koirala. He said that the foundation should make Girija Prasad’s economic policy, economic decision and economic priorities the subject of research. <\/p>\n
He said that the government should take a clear decision on which direction to take the economy. He said that the economy will be the biggest challenge for the country after the disaster and the government should think seriously about resource mobilization. <\/p>\n
Thapa also claimed that the next general convention of the Nepali Congress will be held on time. He said that the process of the convention will start from September 19 and the process of the central general convention will start from September 1. <\/p>\n
He said, “We are bound by the Constitution, we are also bound by the party’s constitution, we are also bound by the verdict of the present honorable court. It does not move even for a day, not even an hour. The process of our convention will start from the 4th and we will start the central general convention from the 16th and conclude the general convention on time. He said that after the general convention, the Congress will go across the country and launch a campaign to restore the broken trust with the citizens. He said that although there is competition within the party, it will move forward by including all sides. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
