Kathmandu. Heads of State, Ministers and high officials of international organizations have arrived in New Delhi to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit that began in New Delhi today. <\/p>\n
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Philippine President Ferdinand R. Chidambaram were also present on the occasion, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.<\/p>\n
President Marcos Jr., Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuanktakio, Burundi’s President Everist Ndayishimiye and World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala were among the leaders who arrived in New Delhi. <\/p>\n
Welcoming the ambassadors through the media X,<\/p>\n
Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed the belief that the Summit would further strengthen bilateral relations and advance shared priorities of the Global South. <\/p>\n
Participation from ASEAN to the African Union<\/p>\n
President Marcos of the Philippines is attending the summit in his capacity as the ASEAN Chair for 2026. India has reiterated its goal of enhancing cooperation in trade, maritime security and regional connectivity in the Indo-Pacific region, considering the Philippines as an important partner of its ‘Act East’ policy. <\/p>\n
India looks forward to taking forward cooperation with Indonesian President Subianto focused on development and prosperity, the Ministry of External Affairs said. The visit of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak will be important with an aim to further deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership with Thailand. <\/p>\n
Cuba, African Union and WTO Presence<\/p>\n
India sees the participation of Foreign Minister Parrilla as an opportunity to expand cooperation on the common agenda of the Global South. Burundi’s President Ndayishimiye is representing the African Union at the conference. <\/p>\n
India also hopes that the presence of WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala will give further impetus to discussions on inclusive trade, development and reforming the World Trade System. The theme of the 18th BRICS Summit hosted by India on September 12 and 13 is ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’. The Summit is aimed at expanding cooperation among the member states in the areas of development, sustainability, innovation, climate action, energy security, financial stability and global institutional reforms. <\/p>\n
Currently, BRICS comprises 11 member countries, including Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. Amid growing fragmentation in the global economy, technological change, geopolitical uncertainty and the climate crisis, BRICS is seen as an important multilateral forum to promote the common voice of emerging economies and the interests of the Global South.
