Kathmandu. More than one thousand three hundred Nepalis living in the disaster-hit city of Gyirong in the Chinese Autonomous Region of Xizang (Tibet) have decided to resume their business even after the heavy damage caused by floods and landslides. <\/p>\n
The catastrophe that occurred after the glacier collapsed in the high Himalayan region on the Nepal side on August 26 had caused a big damage at the Gyirong border point on the Nepal-China border. This area is a trade point on the Chinese side connected to the Rasuwagadhi border of Nepal. <\/p>\n

43 people have died in Gyirong County and 519 are still missing, according to Chinese officials. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing. <\/p>\n
Even after the disaster, most of the Nepali businessmen living there are preparing to restart their business instead of going back to Gyirong as a place connected to their job, dreams and future. Saga Tshering Tamang, who runs a gift shop and restaurant business in the area, shared his experience that he tried to contact his family in Nepal after hearing the news of the disaster. He said that the Chinese government has provided food, health care and necessary management. <\/p>\n
‘I told you not to worry at home. Food, medicine and all the arrangements are good here. The immigration police and other officials also helped me by saying that if there is any problem, I will make arrangements if I want to return to Nepal,” he said. <\/p>\n
Rajendra Ghatani, who runs a silver utensils business, said that the Gyirong area has become not just a place to work for him, but his base. “I feel very comfortable in this city. I feel safe here,” he said. According to him, many Nepali businessmen in Gyirong are dreaming of expanding their business from here to other big cities of China in the future. Tax exemption for Nepalis of Rasuwa <\/p>\n
According to Tamang, Gyirong is connected to Rasuwa and it is easy for Nepali businessmen to do business there. “Nepalis in Rasuwa have the facility of tax exemption. You can start business with low investment and reach your village in two hours. This is the biggest opportunity for us,” he said. <\/p>\n
For centuries, the Gyirong border point has been an important center of trade and people-to-people relations between China and Nepal. Although the catastrophe has caused a big blow to the business of Nepali businessmen there, they still consider Gyirong as the land of their dreams and maintain a stand to stay there and start anew.
