The construction of an 18-km section of the 400 KV transmission line from New Butwal substation, which is important for Nepal-India cross-border power trade, has been completed.

The Millennium Challenge Account Nepal (MCA-Nepal) has completed the construction of the transmission line section under the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Nepal Compact. According to MCA-Nepal, the construction was expedited after the request of the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation and the work was completed within the stipulated timeframe. In the program organized at the New Butwal Substation, Secretary at the Ministry of Finance and Chairman of the MCA-Nepal Board of Directors, Dr. Ghanashyam Upadhyay said that the completion of the transmission line is an important achievement for the expansion of Nepal’s electricity infrastructure and cross-border power network. He expressed gratitude to the US government for its support to Nepal’s power infrastructure development through the MCC-Nepal Compact and said that the Nepal Government is looking forward to the benefits to accrue after the completion of the project. Sunil Poudel, joint secretary at the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, said that cross-border electricity connectivity is an important part of Nepal’s expansion of electricity generation and transmission capacity.

According to him, the completion of the transmission line on the Nepal side is an example of achieving achievement in infrastructure development through coordination among the government, implementing agencies, development partners and local communities.

Acting Executive Director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Dirgha Yu Kumar Shrestha also said that the completion of the transmission line is an important achievement for the energy sector. He said that this has prepared the basis for further strengthening the electricity network between Nepal and India.

Although the construction of the 18-km transmission line on the Nepal side has been completed, it will not start the flow of electricity immediately. Necessary approvals and other technical works are yet to be completed for the transmission line to operate the Nepal-India border.

Executive Director of MCA-Nepal, Khadga Bahadur Bista, said that the necessary resources, contractors and partners have been mobilized to complete the project within the limited time as per the request of the Government of Nepal. According to him, work will now be done to complete the remaining work required to start the transmission line. This is expected to help not only between Nepal and India but also in the expansion of the broader regional electricity network and energy cooperation. Director of MCC Residential National Mission Dion Francisco said that support from the Government of Nepal, Nepal Electricity Authority, MCA-Nepal, contractors, consultants, local governments and local communities has been significant for the transmission line construction.

315 km of transmission lines and three substations

The 18-km section from New Butwal to the India border is a part of the MCA-Nepal Electricity Transmission Project. Under the MCC Nepal Compact, a total of 315 km of high voltage transmission lines and three substations are planned to be constructed.

The project aims to improve the availability and reliability of electricity in Nepal, strengthen energy security, expand the capacity to transmit electricity to future generation, and develop infrastructure for cross-border electricity trade. Necessary

technical support is also being provided to the Electricity Regulatory Commission and Nepal Electricity Authority under the project. With the expansion of hydropower generation capacity in Nepal, there is a growing need for transmission infrastructure to supply electricity to domestic market and export to India and other regional markets.

In such a situation, the completion of the transmission line from New Butwal substation to the Indian border is seen as an important phase of infrastructure expansion for cross-border electricity trade. Now, after completing the remaining approvals and technical process, the transmission line will be operational, which will provide additional infrastructure for electricity exchange and trade between Nepal and India.

18-km transmission line ready for Nepal-India power trade Kathmandu.
