Nepali Congress leader and coordinator of the 14th General Convention Preparatory Committee, Dr. Shashank Koirala has said that the self-respect of the party leaders and cadres should not be the subject of bargaining for any position. Addressing a press conference on Monday, he made it clear that it was not appropriate under any circumstances for the supporters of the special convention to unilaterally move ahead without waiting for the court’s verdict and ignoring the dialogue.

Addressing a press conference, Dr Koirala said, “At a time when the issue of the party’s legitimacy is sub judice at the Supreme Court, it cannot be considered appropriate to reach a consensus through dialogue and dialogue by postponing the unilateral schedule of the party’s convention and general convention or to move ahead unilaterally without waiting for the verdict of the honorable Supreme Court.” He said that they have been making continuous efforts to hold the 15th general convention on the basis of consensus, collaboration and unity from the very beginning, keeping the party’s main spirit, democratic norms and national responsibilities at the centre. “We have repeatedly urged the party to refrain from any step that could push it towards split, to find a solution through dialogue and consensus and to create an environment that does not harm the internal life of the organization,” he said. “But unfortunately, these efforts were not received positively.”

“

Dr. Koirala said that the position will be managed only if certain conditions are accepted or the position sharing will be made the basis of solution instead of political consensus, which will weaken the glorious history and democratic culture of the Congress. Koirala said that the self-respect of the leaders and cadres of the Nepali Congress cannot be a matter of bargaining for any post.

Recalling that they had urged the party not to create further disputes in the party in the name of special general convention, not to weaken the democratic process and not to damage organizational unity, the supporters of the special general convention ignored this request. Stating that the convention and general convention to be held by the leadership formed from the so-called special general convention were aimed at institutionalizing the split rather than uniting the party, Dr Koirala said it was the need of the hour to seek a solution in a way that respects both legal and political aspects keeping the party’s future at the centre.

He has appealed to all the leaders, cadres and well-wishers not to be influenced by misleading and irresponsible political propaganda in the present situation and urged them not to participate in the so-called convention/general convention that is scheduled to start from Ashwin 17 by breaching the due process. He said, “I heartily appeal to all Nepali Congress friends to make the central general convention to be held on December 21, 22 and 23 a success by actively participating in the convention of various levels from the wards as per the schedule unveiled by the legal leadership elected from the 14th General Convention.” Stating that the NC’s strength lies in its history, ideology, democratic character and the loyalty of its cadres, he said the party could be re-established as a strong, credible and hopeful centre of the citizens only by standing firmly on the path of statute, legality and unity.

Stating that the Nepali Congress, which carries the history, people’s faith and political legacy of Nepal’

s democratic movement, is going through an uncomfortable and challenging situation today, Koirala said, “The current dispute in the party is not only about any individual, group or post, but it is a serious political question related to the legitimacy, democratic culture, organizational unity and future of the party.” ’

Self-respect of NC leaders and cadres cannot be a subject of bargaining for any position: Dr. Shashank Koirala Kathmandu.
