Kathmandu The meeting of the Development, Economic Affairs and Good Governance Committee discussed the quality, price fixation, supply, market management and protection of consumer goods. <\/p>\n
In a meeting of the committee held on Friday, Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Deepak Kumar Sah said that the ministry should increase production, reduce unnecessary dependence on import, secure the supply system and ensure the rights of consumers. He said, “The jurisdiction of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies is very wide. But it is directly related to the production of the industry and the kitchen of the common people. Therefore, our thinking should be clear, to increase production, reduce unnecessary dependence on imports, secure the supply system and ensure the rights of consumers.” Minister Sah said that the supply of LP gas is the main problem that the common people have experienced in recent times. He said that the supply of gas is not only on the basis of the number of bullets but also on the basis of the entire supply. Stating that technical analysis is being used to identify the problem, he said that the study is being carried out on import, transportation, roads, refilling capacity, storage, distribution, geographical imbalance of demand, market management and security. He said that the strategy related to LP supply has been developed at three levels: immediate, medium and long-term. He said, “Our strategy is at three levels. Immediate relief, medium term system improvement and long-term energy security. Continuous discussions are being held with the stakeholders on increasing the storage capacity of LPG, improving bottling and distribution capacity and arranging emergency stock. Minister Sah said that the ministry has also prioritized the easy supply of daily consumables and price control. He questioned the increasing import and said that Nepal should move from importing only for consumption to a production-oriented economy. Although Nepal has data on paddy and maize production, preparations are underway to conduct a study through satellite mapping to find out the exact situation, he said.<\/p>\n
He said, “According to the data of 2021\/22, about 51 lakh metric tonnes of paddy and 31 lakh metric tonnes of maize were produced in Nepal. But there is no reason to believe this figure. For this, we are trying to take the initiative to measure the production through satellite mapping.” The minister also stressed on the need to link maize with the modern value chain of production, processing and consumption. <\/p>\n
He said that the purpose of market monitoring is not to intimidate businessmen but to ensure fair competition and consumer rights. He said that anyone who violates the law will be punished equally.<\/p>\n
The minister also mentioned in the committee that a fine of three lakh rupees was recently imposed on Salt Trading Corporation Limited. He said that preparations are being made to make the market monitoring data-driven and risk-based. <\/p>\n
Minister Sah said that in the long run, Nepal should be transformed from an economy of import and consumption to an economy of self-production and consumption. He said that the production and processing of local and nutritious crops like maize, millet, buckwheat should be increased in barren and underutilized land. Minister Sah also stressed the need to reduce dependence on imported LPs for cooking and increase the consumption of electricity in the country. According to the Nepal <\/p>\n
Electricity Authority, the national grid penetration has reached 97.6 percent in the fiscal year 2081\/82 and per capita electricity consumption has reached 465 units. <\/p>\n
In the meeting, the industry secretary and other committee members put forth their views on the issues of supply of consumer goods, price control, market management and consumer protection. <\/p>\n
