Kathmandu. The prices of food items in the world market have increased again. According to the United Nations (UN), the price of food grains in the world market has increased due to reduced supply and uncertainty about the supply schedule. <\/p>\n
According to Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, the Food Price Index of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reached an average of 136 points in September. This is 1.5 percent higher than in August and 5.8 percent compared to the same month last year. Sugar prices rose the most in September. Sugar prices rose 6.1 percent to the highest level since April 2025, Dujarric said. The price hike was expected to further tighten the supply of sugar in the global market. Similarly, the price of cereals and vegetable oil has also increased. The price of grain has increased by 5.1 percent in a month. The price of wheat, in particular, has reached the highest level since August 2023. The supply of wheat has been affected due to transportation and logistical disruptions in the Black Sagar region, FAO said. The price of corn has also reached the highest level in three years. Dujarric said that the declining supply and the uncertainty over transportation through the Strait of Hormuz have put more pressure on the price of corn. <\/p>\n
The supply chain disruption in the global market is expected to have a direct impact on businesses and consumers. The rise in food prices will put pressure on households’ daily expenses and will also put additional pressure on overall inflation.
