Addressing the inaugural session of the 15th general convention of the Nepali Congress in Kathmandu on Sunday, Pokharel said that the country was passing through various challenges and the political parties should stand together on the question of nationality. Stating that the risk of natural disasters is increasing in Nepal due to climate change in recent period, he stressed the need of collaboration among the political parties to deal with the disaster. Stating that the floods in Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers have caused huge loss of life and property and thousands of people are still missing, he said the question of climate justice is a common issue of Nepal. <\/p>\n
Pokharel said that there is also concern about the future of democracy. Stating that the government has not been able to hold a dialogue with the elected people’s representatives, parliament and citizens, he said that the political parties should move forward collectively to protect democracy. <\/p>\n
He said, “Just as the leftist and democratic forces of Nepal have defeated the Rana regime, the Panchayat regime and the dictatorship of King Gyanendra, in the same way, the time has come to rise collectively for the protection of democracy.” Pokharel said that the political parties should stand together to protect nationality and sovereignty as Nepal is in the grip of geopolitical conflict. He said that a common view should be made on national interest to assure Nepal’s neighboring countries. <\/p>\n
He said although the people had expected good governance, effective service delivery and rapid development, the progress could not be made as per the expectation.<\/p>\n
Stating that a large number of youths were compelled to go abroad for employment, he said the dreams and expectations of the new generation should not be turned into disappointment. <\/p>\n
“Unless we can turn the glory of history into a plan and resolution for the future, the dreams of the youth cannot be fulfilled,” he said. <\/p>\n
Pokharel said that the political parties should internalize the changes brought in the psychology of the society by the information technology revolution. He said that the 15th general convention of the Congress should be able to address the expectations and aspirations of the new generation. <\/p>\n
Stating that changing the face alone is not enough, he said that the political parties should take forward their movements and organizations in a new way according to the psychology of the new generation. <\/p>\n
