Kathmandu. Stakeholders have demanded that the citizenship of the British Gurkha soldiers and their descendants should be continued. At a program organized in Kathmandu on Monday, they also urged the government to amend the constitution and continue the citizenship. <\/p>\n

Bahadur Budhathoki, vice-president of the Nepali Citizenship Continuity Campaign for British Gurkhas and their descendants (CNC BG-UK), said that Nepal’s constitution itself has snatched away the right to citizenship of Nepal. <\/p>\n
“Clause 10 (1) of the Citizenship Act, 2063 (1) states that if a Nepali citizen acquires the citizenship of any foreign country, he or she cannot acquire Nepali citizenship,” Budhathoki said. <\/p>\n

Chairman of the Ex-Servicemen Welfare Committee, Nepal, Hum Bahadur Thapa demanded that the government should ensure the rights of the ex-servicemen as they have been legally deprived of citizenship. Thapa warned that if the government did not address their one-point demand of continuing citizenship of descendants, they would take initiative to raise the issue in the parliament after Dashain and Tihar. Prof. Dr. Surendra KC stressed on the need for the British Gurkhas recruited through the tripartite treaty between Nepal, Britain and India to be naturalized by Nepali descent. Dr. KC said that the prejudice of the state towards the British soldiers recruited by the consent of the state level is wrong, and it is also against human rights to remove the citizenship from the legal level. KC also suggested to prepare for the struggle as the state will not accept it easily. Senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi said it was unfortunate that the issue of dual citizenship for NRNA was not mentioned in the constitution itself. “Since the British military service is guided by the state, the issue of British Gurkhas is different from that of NRNs and they should continue to have citizenship of Nepali descent,” Tripathi said. Secretary of the Ex-Servicemen Welfare Committee, Nepal, Advocate Chet Bahadur Ale said that the demands of the British Gurkhas could be addressed by amending the constitution of 2072. Joint Secretary Purna Bahadur Rana said that citizenship is a fundamental right and the Gurkha soldiers should get it. <\/p>\n
